Want To Move Towards "Lithium"-Test Solutions For Solid-State Batteries

2021-12-02

As a "post-lithium battery", the highly anticipated competition for the practical use of all solid-state batteries has begun. Toyota, which is leading in patents, is discussing public trial production of cars in 2021. Volkswagen of Germany and Quantum Scape, a Silicon Valley start-up in the United States, will start producing batteries that can significantly extend the range of pure electric vehicles (EV) around 2024. Solid-state batteries are regarded as the next-generation key technology affecting the electric vehicle industry. Different from lithium-ion batteries and lithium-ion polymer batteries that are commonly used today, solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes instead of the electrolyte and diaphragm of traditional lithium-ion batteries.

Why are solid-state batteries so popular? There are two major advantages. First, it is highly safe and will not catch fire or even explode under extreme conditions. Second, the high cruising range mainly reflects its greater energy density. These two points solve the shortcomings of liquid lithium batteries, and people have to look forward to solid lithium batteries as the next technology outlet to replace liquid lithium batteries.

At present, solid-state batteries are still in a fairly laboratory-pilot stage, and they are also facing many technical obstacles, such as the formation of lithium dendrites, low coulombic efficiency caused by interface impedance, and side reactions between solid electrolytes and positive and negative electrodes. This will greatly affect the fast charging performance and cycle life of solid-state batteries.

The basic problems that solid-state batteries used in new energy vehicles face in the market promotion mainly include charging time (current density), cycle life, safety, and operating temperature. Fortunately, solid-state batteries follow the same physical principles as traditional lithium-ion batteries. Many battery management solutions and test solutions developed for traditional lithium-ion batteries will continue to evolve and continue to be applied.

The APM SPS-M/A series can provide battery cell cycle life testing and electric vehicle power battery simulation experiments. The modular design can independently set parameters and test items for each channel, and can flexibly integrate a thermostat, temperature tester, and internal resistance Testers and other equipment.
